TRUE GRIT

Always a force to be reckoned with during awards season, the Coen brothers have something cooking with the remake of True Grit. Fresh off of last year's Oscar win for Best Actor, Jeff Bridges is back in the saddle (literally) in the role that won John Wayne the golden man.

Bridges plays "Rooster" Cogburn, a man hired by a young girl to avenge her murdered father. The original Grit, first seen back in 1969, epitomized manliness--the newest version should be no different. Matt Damon is Le Boeuf, a Texas Ranger; Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie, the daughter; and Josh Brolin plays Tom Chaney, the man who they're all after.

Ethan Coen has said that this updated film will be a more faithful adaptation of Charles Portis' 1968 novel from which both are based from. I was one of the few that wasn't a big fan of Bridge's win for Crazy Heart. He had played much better roles in much better movies. That's sort of the way with the Academy though, sometimes celebrating for a lifetime of success rather than a singular role. Bridges has been a mainstay in Hollywood for years though; he also has the pedigree of his surname, and I do think his win was justified for his contributions. I prefer Bridges in parts where he can relay his natural goofiness. It shines through here a bit, even though the Dude's wearing a scraggly beard and an eye-patch.

There's something intriguing about a plot that is simplistic in its execution. A man is murdered, and must be brought to justice. There's some pretty deadpan moments from Cogburn and Le Boeuf as well, which contrasts the solemn tone that runs throughout. Here are some one-sheets from each of the main characters, as well as a banner that combines all four.
